Art That Speaks to the Senses

Our gallery, the Sensory Hall, invites you to engage with art beyond the visual — to see, to listen, and to feel.

Each exhibition is thoughtfully curated to highlight emerging local voices and is paired with the artist’s personal scent, allowing you to experience their work through multiple senses.

We believe every piece holds a story — not just in what you see, but in what you sense. By sharing the artist’s narrative and olfactory expression, we invite you into a deeper, more intimate connection with their work.

Art, not just seen — but sensed.

SLOWWAVES

Currently On

Artist: Xavier Allen

Project Summary:

The New Other presents ‘SLOWWAVE’, a solo exhibition by Xavier Allen that, through the senses, remembers a home that was never known. Xavier draws on her childhood spent walking the shores of Haida Gwaii collecting ocean-polished stones, hearing waves lap against the shore, and time stretching into eternity. This was the birthplace of her fascination with abstract form.

Xavier’s sculptures are inspired by energy and higher dimensions. Translated into natural materials like bronze, cement, and marble, each piece grounds the ethereal in the physical world. This connection is further enhanced via charcoal illustrations and suspended drawings captured in sheer silk. Viewers are able to experience every angle of a piece at once, walking through layers of this cohesive world.

A video installation, along with guided sound bath experiences, connects this new body of work to memories of the coast. As a certified practitioner, Xavier Allen offers a sound meditation to guide you through the senses as a way to deepen relaxation and your relationship to sculpture. Join The New Other and Xavier Allen as they create a sanctuary within the city that offers a return to wildness, safety, and a presence that stays in one’s heart no matter where they land.

TIMELINES

Artist: Edward Gajdel

Medium: BW archival pigment prints from 35mm BW film scans
Project Summary: Discovering the unconscious artist within.

  • Timelines is the presentation of two sequential frames as they appear on an uncut roll of 35mm film. Upon discovery they are scanned and printed as a diptych. I have not consciously set out to create diptychs and only become aware of them through the editing of my work.

They are the result of years of personal photojournalism which for me was the antidote to the structured engagement of my commercial and editorial art practice. I afforded myself the freedom to be spontaneous and free of any constraints whatsoever. I always felt it to be my true artistic expression and the fuel that kept me passionate about my work.

It has been only in the last few years that I’ve paid attention to the occurrence of these diptychs and started to actively search for them among my personal archives. In the process of editing I’ve come to re-experience my past but more importantly to recognize that there is a spirit present in this work that I’ve never been fully aware of and these images give that spirit a real voice.

The spontaneous approach to creating this work reminds that it is beyond thinking and so much more about seeing with my heart.

As I continue to discover these sequences and the insights they reveal I’ve come to the realization that I am building a portrait the unconscious.
